Interesting Information About Ithaca
Ithaca and Gratiot County -- Ithaca is the county seat of Gratiot County. It is within 2 hours of Lansing, Saginaw, Grand Rapids, Detroit and Traverse City - all major Michigan cities. Agriculture is a large part of the Gratiot County's economy and plays a role in several manufacturing and retail businesses in the area. The area is the leading producer of dry beans, sugar beets, corn, wheat, poultry, pigs, cattle and dairy products. Their annual festival, the Ithaca Fun Fest, is held on the 4th Saturday of August. Ithaca has two parks within its city limits: the Woodland Park and Atkinson Park.
Ithaca History -- Ithaca was founded in 1855 and continues to be a very historical community. The city was named after Ithaca, New York. Settlement and development of the main business district began about that time. After streets and lots were plotted, Ithaca received the Village designation. It remained a village until 1961 when it was named a city. Ithaca is currently a National History Site because of the turn-of-century buildings in the downtown area.
