          Interesting Information About Whitehall

/files/Images/Howmet Playhouse.jpgHowmet Playhouse -- The Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp has donated the Howmet Playhouse to the City of Whitehall. Best known for the annual Howmet Summer Theatre Festival, the playhouse has expanded its schedule to include events throughout the year. The intimate 400-seat setting acts as a perfect venue for lyric and musical theatre, jazz, blues, folk and classical concerts, screen presentations, fundraisers and business meetings. The playhouse produces our own professional theatre, but is also available for touring artists, promoters and rental for special events. The Howmet Playhouse is located at 304 South Mears Avenue in Whitehall. For ticket information, call the City of Whitehall, 231-894-4048.

/files/Images/Whitehall History.jpgWhitehall
History -- Whitehall's recorded history began around 1859 when Charles Mears, a noted lumber baron to the area, platted the village along with Giles B. Slocum, naming it Mears. The population continued to grow due to its strategic location for floating and distributing lumber. In 1862, it was renamed Whitehall and incorporated as the Village of Whitehall in 1867. It later was incorporated as a city in 1942.
